Sharing from the Heart

If you have had the opportunity to see Les Miserables you will recognize this picture of Jean Valjean meeting the bishop who exemplifies the goodness and mercy of God at this most critical time of Valjean's life.  As I prepare myself to enter into the beautiful season of Lent next Wednesday, I hold in my heart the desire to be the presence of Christ for others in the ways God is calling me to do so.   I may not meet a hardened criminal or a be involved in a crisis moment of another.   My day may be very routine and end "without much happening."   Still, I am God's instrument and even the way I answer an email or a phone call can communicate the desire in my heart for the good of the person at the receiving end.

Our society encourages me to surround and cuddle my ego with all the selfishness I can.   Yet Jesus shows me in his suffering and passionate death, that it is selflessness that is important.  It is giving.  Giving in and giving up.  Giving to and giving away.   I pray for the grace to give as Jesus gives to me, to each of us.

It is a beautiful day today and I thank God for these moments to pause and offer thanksgiving for all that has filled it thus far.   It has been a busy day, an uneventful day.   It has been a routine day.  Too often I forget to pause to thank God for this kind of a day.  I always remember when I have a sudden disappointment or suffering, or when a joyful experience has touched my heart.   Sometimes the "ordinary" days go unnoticed.  So right now, I praise God for this day which will soon fade into history.  There will never be another like it.   Praise to You, Lord, for all the gifts you give to me, drab, drastic, dull, glorious, whatever-days!   They are all filled with blessings for me to uncover.  Thank you for all!

SNOW and Rain, Bless the Lord1

Much of our nation has been dealing with snow and ice and difficulties during this record winter of 2014!  Hmmmm.  I don't recalling praying the words of the psalmist very much these days:  "Snow and rain, ice . . . bless the Lord!"   I have been preoccupied in using my "free days" to catch up on work or to get ahead with my many responsibilities.   The siesta of those I met in Italy a few years ago, is not part of my American way of life.   But I forget to bring the sacred into my mundane moments.   I forget to bless the Lord for what each day brings.    I need to remember to make this divine connection, for this is what my life is about.
