I am here in Chicago for the upcoming Catholics on Call Conference that will begin on August 5th at CTU.  I am looking forward to encourage the young people who will be coming to place their lives and hearts and future plans into the hands of Christ.  God is calling our young adults to be who God has created them to be.  Please pray for them and for the COC team this weekend that they may continue to be open and pliable to your Will for their lives.

This would be a good time to think about each of the vocation calls we have received.  Commitment to our God-given vocation is most certainly compromised and misrepresented in our contemporary culture.  I cannot help but recall the song of years gone by, called What's forever for? when I think of the ways our world tells us how to handle challenges within our commitment.   As long as one is happy, society says, it is okay to switch lanes and renege promises or vows once professed.  "As long as one is happy" is so misleading and emotionally charged.   Does that mean I can hurt others, do anything I please to achieve happiness?   Can one be happy and still strive to be faithful, to make sacrifices, or to work things out with a spouse, an employer, a member of one's religious community or one's bishop?  Why does society settle for not making the effort to be faithful to ourselves and others?

Resurrection Spirituality reminds me that no matter what the vocation or struggle along the way, the Risen Christ walks with me to help me and to be my strength.  I pray now for the young adults who will be with us this weekend, as well as for all who struggle in times of trial to live the commitment they made in times of great joy.   May God grant us the gift of faithfulness.  Amen.
