Resurrection seems like a terrible taunt right now. How could Christ believe that this would all be crowned with everlasting life for each of us? It is easy to believe these things when all is going well. I suppose it was easy for Christ to believe these things as he walked the roads of Galilee or visited his friends in Bethany. But when suffering comes so intensely, is it possible to hold on to these proclaimed values?
I think the answer is "YES" when we allow God to supply our strength. I think the answer is "YES" when we realize, like Jesus, that we are loved unconditionally forever. I think the answer is "YES" when we have the gift of faith in the marrow of our bones, so much a part of us that nothing, not even the worst suffering or cruelty in life, can tear it away.
I think this is what Jesus taught us through his Passion, Death and Resurrection. I think he taught us to stay in union with him as much as we can and to hold on to the graces he pours upon us, especially in difficult and excruciating times. I know my Redeemer LIVES and all his promises to me will be kept. I pray for the grace to walk through my own passion and death in life . . . no matter how trivial or how devastating. I pray for the grace to wait for the resurrection moments that I believe in the marrow of my bones will come. I look forward to the Resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
O Christ Jesus, my Resurrection and Life, grant that I may live now, not I, but may you live in me!
