As we anticipate Holy Week and the sacred celebrations of the life, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus, today's promise of eternal life from John 8:51-59 touches me deeply.
There is nothing you or I can do to earn God's love. It is freely given from even before I was conceived in my mother's womb. Unbelievable!
There is nothing you or I can do to earn the Gift of Eternal Life. It is freely given through the saving life, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus, the One Who promised eternal life to us many times during his life on earth, signed, sealed and delivered this promise and all other promises on the Day he rose from the dead. Jesus is a Promise Keeper.
How foolish it would be for me to take a free winning lottery ticket and discard it "somewhere" in my home or office. When it came time to cash it in, I would frantically look for it and not finding it, be sorely upset. If I realized its worth, I would put it in a safe place so that I could easily find it and use it. This logic is quite simple.
To say I am grateful to God for inviting me to Eternal Life is such an understatement. I don't think I can adequately understand or appreciate what this Gift is to me. I don't want to misplace it in my busy life. I don't want to disregard it as a spoiled child. I want to take time to cherish the moment and re-realize the great love of God for me, with which this Gift is given.
Thank you, Jesus, for the promises you keep. Thank you for living, dying and rising so that I may live eternally with you. As the months and years bring me closer to eternity, help me to live and appreciate the wonder of your love. Unbelievable? No. You are my Resurrection and my LIFE. I look forward to the final resurrection of the dead and LIFE with you forever.
